Someone asked me the other day whether I like teaching. I don’t really know how to answer that question.
I like students. I like talking to them, I usually like listening to them when I can get them to talk to me, I like thinking about what they are thinking and why they are thinking that, I like helping them or feeling like I’m helping them.
I like “the material.” I like thinking about it, I like learning more of it, I like noticing new things that I hadn’t noticed before, I like thinking about how it can be organized and clarified and how one idea fits into another and influences those over there. I like understanding things better than I did before.
I like to talk.
I like to be liked.
I don’t think any of that is really the same thing as liking to teach.
Like it or not, Fall semester Session 1 started August 20. Time’s up.
“I like students. I like talking to them, I usually like listening to them when I can get them to talk to me, I like thinking about what they are thinking and why they are thinking that, I like helping them or feeling like I’m helping them.”
I’m gonna disagree a little and say that paragraph sums up excellence in teaching. We all should have teachers who teach with that “like” …
