Along with many other congregations around the world, our congregation is celebrating the 200th anniversary of the composition of “Silent Night” this Advent season.
This involves some attention to each of the verses of the song, and using some new music composed for the occasion that we are struggling a bit to learn, and some pastoral reflections on the texts, and so on.
The second verse of “Silent Night” refers to the announcement of Jesus’ birth to the shepherds “abiding in the fields.”
Silent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight,
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heavenly hosts sing “Alleluia!”
Christ, the Savior, is born,
Christ, the Savior, is born!
This got me thinking: God’s marketing plan is so strange.
The angelic announcement to shepherds would not withstand any kind of reach-frequency-media vehicle scrutiny at all.
The shepherds as influencers make no sense.
So … what was the strategy there? Still wondering …
